چکیده

0031-9007= The cuprate material Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO-2212) is believed to be doped by a combination of cation switching and excess oxygen. The interstitial oxygen dopants are of particular interest because scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments have shown that they are positively correlated with the local value of the superconducting gap, and calculations suggest that the fundamental attraction between electrons is modulated locally. In this work, we use density functional theory to try to ascertain which locations in the crystal are energetically most favorable for the O dopant atoms, and how the surrounding cage of atoms deforms. Our results provide support for the identification of STM resonances at 1 eV with dopant interstitial O atoms, and show how the local electronic structure is modified nearby.

Correlating off-stoichiometric doping and nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity in the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta.

A microscopic theory is presented for the observed electronic disorder in superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. The essential phenomenology is shown to be consistent with the existence of two types of interstitial oxygen dopants: those serving primarily as charge reservoirs and those close to the apical plane contributing both carriers and electrostatic potential to the CuO2 plane. The nonlinear...

Enhanced pairing correlations near oxygen dopants in cuprate superconductors.

Recent experiments on Bi-based cuprate superconductors have revealed an unexpected enhancement of the pairing correlations near the interstitial oxygen dopant ions. Here we propose a possible mechanism--based on local screening effects--by which the oxygen dopants do modify the electronic parameters within the CuO2 planes and strongly increase the superexchange coupling J. This enhances the spi...

The Impact of an Oxygen Dopant in an ideal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ Crystal

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy studies have shown that local nanoscale pairing inhomogenities are correlated with interstitial oxygen dopants in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. Combining electrostatic and cluster calculations, in this paper the impact of a dopant on the local Madelung and charge transfer energies, magnetic exchange J , Zhang-Rice mobility, and interactions with the lattice is investigat...

Real-space fluctuations of effective exchange integrals in high-Tc cuprates

We present ab-initio calculations of effective magnetic exchange, J , as well as Hubbard parameters (t, U and δε) as a function of the local distribution of doping atoms for the high-Tc superconducting (CaxLa1−x)(Ba1.75−xLa0.25+x)Cu3Oy family. We found that both the exchange and the energies of the magnetic orbitals are strongly dependant on the local dopant distribution, both through the induc...

High-temperature superconductivity and the characteristics of the electronic energy spectrum

The possibility is indicated of applying the theory of superconductors with overlapping energy bands to describe the thermodynamic and electromagnetic properties of the high-temperature compounds La2−x(Ba, Sr)xCuO4 and Y Ba2Ci3O7−δ . The twoband model was used to obtain high values of Tc, two energy gaps 2∆1/Tc > 3.5 and 2∆2/Tc < 3.5, large negative values of d ln Tc/d ln V (V is the volume) in...
